Journal Entry: Crispin – The Weight of Responsibility
Date: 26th January 2025
Location: Hawthorne Manor, Wiltshire
The fire crackles, casting long shadows over the walls of my study, as I sit here and reflect on a son who, despite the quiet dignity with which he carries himself, embodies the very essence of leadership that our family holds dear. Crispin, now 38 years old, has, like his brothers, become a man of great substance, but it is his position within the family—caught between the legacy of Hunter and Clarence—that defines him in many ways.
As the second-born son, Crispin has never sought to assume the role that has now fallen to Clarence, the mantle of firstborn, even though the loss of Hunter has fundamentally reshaped the family. Yet, in his own way, Crispin has embraced the duty of second-born with pride, understanding the importance of family unity, and the unspoken responsibilities that come with his place in our history.
From a young age, it was clear that Crispin was different. He had an innate ability to listen, to observe, and to understand the world with a level of insight far beyond his years. His education, much like his brothers’, was steeped in the values we hold as a family—discipline, honor, and a devotion to service. He pursued his studies with diligence, just as Hunter and Clarence had before him, but there was always something about Crispin that set him apart. He was not as quick to act, but his considered approach has served him well as he navigates the challenges of his role as the second son.
I recall his first command, when he stepped into the shoes of a leader for the first time. It was clear from the start that Crispin would not only meet the expectations of our name, but would redefine them in his own quiet, determined way. While Clarence, now carrying the mantle of Hunter, has embraced the brash confidence of the firstborn, Crispin’s leadership is marked by his calm resolve and deep sense of duty. Where others might falter under the weight of expectation, Crispin remains steadfast, always thinking two steps ahead.
This is a characteristic I admire in him, but it is also a burden. Crispin understands the value of tradition and legacy, but he carries the weight of these expectations with an unspoken burden. He is not just the second-born; he is the keeper of our family’s past, a reminder of the sacrifices and lossesthat have shaped us.
As I look at him today, I see a man who has accepted his place in the family with quiet grace. There is no resentment, no desire to be something he is not. He understands his role as the second son, and in that, he has become an anchor for our family—a reminder that leadership is not about position, but about commitment and selfless service.
I have often wondered if Crispin feels the weight of his position in the same way that Clarence does now as the firstborn. But one thing is certain: Crispin has never allowed the loss of Hunter to define him. Instead, he has taken the lessons that Hunter taught him—the importance of discipline, of honor, of duty—and made them his own. In doing so, he has carried on the Hawthorne name with dignity and integrity, ensuring that our legacy endures, even in the face of such profound loss.
It is an unspoken truth within our family: we do not choose the roles we are given. Yet, in the end, it is how we bear the weight of those roles that defines us. Crispin, in his quiet way, has carried his with grace and has proven that there is strength not only in the loudness of command but in the stillness of reflection.
The quiet strength he demonstrates every day is a testament to the family values we have instilled in him. As his father, I could not be prouder of the man he has become.
